This series of 10 graphite drawings are of imagined lace patterns that depict calamitous situations that are affecting birdlife today, often due to humankind. Each lace pattern design shows a different scenario in which indifference, blood sport, or human interest alone have a repetitive negative impact on birds. Though lace has historically portrayed nature in a romantic, idealistic way, here nature is shown as overlooked, threatened, or killed outright. The subject matter is fundamentally sad, but using lace as the vehicle to deliver the image presents a softer view as the scene is stylized and delicate; the details are found in the lace pattern itself rather than the loss of life. The series’ asks the viewer to consider a different point of view (that of the birds), and poses the question of what we could do better for our planet and the other species with whom we share it. Humankind can continue to follow patterns of destruction and carelessness with nature or we can create patterns of beauty and live harmoniously with it.

These watercolor paintings reflect my interest in pattern, texture, ornament, and the natural world, especially birds. Made with granulating and metallic watercolors on 300 lb cold pressed paper, they change with the light, recalling medieval illuminated manuscripts. As a great student of art history, the past informs my compositions. The curving forms are inspired by wrought ironwork found in Spain, particularly in Gothic and Baroque cathedrals and turn of the 20th century architectural railings that are ubiquitous in European cities. Repeating shapes and motifs show my admiration for the work of Morris & Co., who sought to bring the beauty of nature indoors during the Victorian age.
